The Montgomery County Department of Police has released the hereunder bodycam footage showing a police officer intervention this week which took place in White Oak, Maryland.
30-year-old victim Mr Finan H. Berhe, died at a hospital after the officer shot him multiple times. In the video, you can see how the police officer, a 17-year veteran of the department, asks the man multiple times to put the knife down and get on the ground.
Mr Berhe clearly ignores the officer’s commands and finally rushes at the officer while still holding his weapon.
Department spokesman Rick Goodale said the officer is a white man whilst Berhe is an African American. Police claimed they responded after a neighbor called about a man who threw a rock at his window.
The shooting took place at approximately 2:15 p.m. on Thursday, May 7.
Police released the video of the shooting so quickly as tensions are escalating in the US over violence on African Americans. It comes after the perceived ‘lynching’ of 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery.
A video posted online this week features the young man being shot in broad daylight in his own Brunswick, Georgia, neighborhood on February 23 while jogging.
The suspects are two males, father and son Gregory McMichael and Travis McMichael. The two men were eventually arrested on Thursday and charged with murder. The suspects allege they presumed Arbery was a burglar.
