If this is your first time back on social media in a few hours, then you will see that terms like Franklin Templeton, Karenstrikesagain and Fire Her are trending.
This comes after a man filmed a woman in New York’s Central Park walking her dog without a leash where it was not allowed. By now, everyone in US media is writing about it.
The woman, named as Amy Cooper of investment firm Franklin Templeton, asks the man to stop filming her and then, in a surprise move, takes out her own smartphone to call 911.
She then clearly says to the operator that an ‘African American man is threatening her and someone needs to send the police’.
She continues by stating: “I’m sorry, I can’t hear! I’m being threatened by a man in the Ramble, please send the cops immediately.”
You can guess that things have spiraled down since then.
Investment Firm Franklin Templeton have since offered the following statement: ‘We take these matters very seriously and we do not condone racism of any kind. While we are int he process of investigating the situation, the employee involved has been put on administrative leave.”
Ms Cooper has since lost her job and her dog. She offered an apology after the video went viral.
“I sincerely and humbly apologize to everyone, especially to that man, his family.”
“It was unacceptable and I humbly and fully apologize to everyone who’s seen that video, everyone that’s been offended… everyone who thinks of me in a lower light and I understand why they do.”
The fact that the trend is called Karen strikes again refers to an earlier incidents where other white women (all named Karen by the internet) called the police on other African Americans doing something which they considered illegal.
As in this case the woman in question was caught on camera making false accusations, this one could take a very nasty turn.
