Hundreds of people have been demonstrating in the Minneapolis for several days and nights to denounce police brutality against African Americans. In the past hours, they burned down the police precinct and watched the building go up in flames. The agents present had to flee according to local media.
The family of George Floyd and Minneapolis authorities have asked protesters to disperse in peace, but protests have already got completely out of hand in several places. Several stores have already been set on fire and looted.
Police use rubber bullets and tear gas to break up the riots. The Democratic Governor of the State of Minnesota, meanwhile, has agreed with US President Trump to call in the National Guard to assist.
President Donald Trump has also interfered seeing the images on social media of a burning police precinct. He added fuel to the fire by calling the protesters “trash” and lashing out at the “very weak radical left” mayor of the city, who he blamed for “a complete lack of leadership.”
Trump stated: ‘I can’t stand back & watch this happen to a great American City, Minneapolis. A total lack of leadership. Either the very weak Radical Left Mayor, Jacob Frey, get his act together and bring the City under control, or I will send in the National Guard & get the job done right.’
‘These THUGS are dishonoring the memory of George Floyd, and I won’t let that happen. Just spoke to Governor Tim Walz and told him that the Military is with him all the way. Any difficulty and we will assume control but, when the looting starts, the shooting starts. Thank you!’
The Minneapolis Police Commissioner, meanwhile, has apologized for Floyd’s death. City Mayor Jacob Frey wants to see the cop who put his knee in Floyd’s neck prosecuted. He also stated that he had not seen anything in images that showed that such a crackdown was necessary.
Floyd’s death is under investigation by the FBI and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
