With 150,000 corona infections worldwide in one day, a new record has been set. The number was reported by the Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who made a stark warning. The largest number of infections was registered on Thursday already, Tedros said. According to the WHO, the corona pandemic is accelerating. There is also more and more testing being done.
Almost half of the new infections come from North, Central and South America, but many cases were also registered in South Asia and the Middle East. “The world is in a new, dangerous phase,” said Tedros.
“Many people are understandably tired of staying at home. Countries want to restart their economies and their social life. But the virus is spreading quickly, it is still fatal and most people can still becoming infected.”
The Director General therefore called on everyone to still keep their distance, wash their hands regularly and continue to respect other hygienic measures. All infections must be traced and infected people must be isolated.
In total, more than 8.6 million cases are now known worldwide. More than 4.5 million patients have recovered while more than 450,000 people have succumbed to the coronavirus pandemic.
